More EU countries allow hardware and DIY retailers to open during Covid-19 lockdowns

Increasing numbers of governments are classing DIY and hardware stores as essential retailers across Europe, allowing them to open for business.

The UK confirmed that “home and hardware stores” were “essential retailers” and could remain open throughout the coronavirus lockdown. Ireland has since clarified a similar stance.

DIY stores in Austria have now been opened, but with strict rules on social distancing.

The Czech Republic saw hardware and DIY stores permitted to reopen from 9 April.

Major hardware outlets in Germany such as OBI are open, although some branches are restricted to trade customers only.

Major DIY outlets in France, like Brico Depot, are offering collection services despite closing all of its stores to normal trading. Brico Depot's e-commerce channels remain open and pick ups are available from certain stores, under strict minimal contact rules.
