NMBS, a UK buying society for independent builders, plumbers, hardware and timber merchants, has been taking stock of a year where its turnover is set to exceed £2.2 billion.

The year saw a number of big projects launch, including the creation of Data Yard, NMBS’s new industry data pool delivered in partnership with the Builders Merchants Federation. Outgoing CEO Chris Hayward also pointed to the work of the Construction Inclusion Coalition: “We’ve made real strides… and I’m proud that NMBS has remained focused on helping create a more diverse, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.”

The year also saw NMBS reach out to former Troy (UK) Limited members after that buying group entered administration.

Hayward addressed the NMBS annual Dinner Dance in October, where more than 1,000 independent builders’ merchants and suppliers came together at Grosvenor House, London. It was the final Dinner Dance hosted by Hayward, who steps down in April 2026, following an incredible 47 year career at NMBS.

“NMBS has never been in better shape,” he said. “With turnover projected to exceed £2.2bn this year, we remain firmly on track, and it’s down to the strength of our members and suppliers that we continue to thrive, even in uncertain times.”

“Our people are what define our industry. This year, we’ve made real strides through the Construction Inclusion Coalition, and I’m proud that NMBS has remained focused on helping create a more diverse, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. Guests dug deep as they donated, raising £10,000 for CRASH, the construction industry charity tackling homeless ness and hospice projects, and the Maddie Rose Foundation, which continues to support young people entering the merchanting sector.

Kevin Williams is the incoming NMBS CEO.
