SPIROL launches aluminium threaded inserts for plastic applications

SPIROL has launched four machined aluminium threaded inserts, designed for heat or ultrasonic installation into straight plastic holes.

The newly released products – Series INS19, INS20, INS29 and INS30 – complement the existing brass product line and expand SPIROL’s threaded insert offering, providing customers with greater flexibility in material selection and performance optimisation.

These new aluminium threaded inserts cover the most commonly used installation methods, including moulded-in, post-mould (cold) press-in, and heat or ultrasonic installation. Heat and ultrasonic installation methods locally remelt the surrounding plastic, enabling improved material flow into the insert’s undercuts and knurls, increasing torque resistance and pull-out performance compared to press-in inserts.

SPIROL added that 2024 aluminium provides significant weight reduction, as it weighs only one-third of brass, making it an ideal choice for lightweight applications and weight-sensitive assemblies. Moreover, 2024 aluminium is a lead-free alloy, supporting evolving environmental, health and safety requirements across global markets. Its galvanic properties also provide increased application flexibility when mating with dissimilar materials, compared to traditional brass inserts.

In terms of performance, the high strength of 2024 aluminium enables improved joint integrity with less thread engagement, while delivering enhanced load-bearing capability. These attributes can contribute to more efficient designs, reduced assembly complexity and improved overall performance.
