Screwfix marks 1,000th store opening across markets

Screwfix has reached the milestone of opening 1,000 stores across the UK, Ireland and France.

Founded in Yeovil in 2005, Screwfix has opened an average of one store per week over the past decade while expanding internationally. In 2019, it launched its first stores in the Republic of Ireland and has since opened more than 40 locations, creating nearly 500 jobs.

In 2022, the retailer expanded into France, opening a distribution centre and its first stores. It now operates 35 stores in the country.

Two years later, Screwfix introduced its new ultra-compact format, Screwfix City. The format offers added convenience for busy tradespeople in city centres, providing a range of more than 3,000 essential products via Click & Collect, with a further 31,000 products available online for next-day collection.

“We’re delighted to have opened our 1,000th Screwfix store. Since our first opening in 2005, we’ve continued to provide ultimate convenience for tradespeople and build on our success in the UK by expanding into the Republic of Ireland and France,” said John Mewett, CEO of Screwfix.

Screwfix currently employs more than 14,000 colleagues across the business and provides in-house development through its apprenticeship programme, with 84% of retail colleagues earning a promotion upon completion.

Looking ahead, Screwfix aims to operate more than 1,000 stores in the UK and Ireland, with the potential for up to 600 stores in France.
